Sharing three appeals for help here from people I trust,  for those who would like to get involved or contribute in some way to any of these worthwhile causes:

1. From my artist friend Amra Ali in Karachi:

Meet 17-year old Allahdin from village Bitwaro, tehsil Chachro, district Mithi, Tharparkar, now in hospital in Karachi. He needs urgent help. He has been admitted to the NIBD (National Institute of Blood Disease and Bone Marrow Transplantation), diagnosed with aplastic anemia for which the curative treatment is Bone Marrow Transplant. This costs Rs. 25,00,000, payable in advance. The cost includes drugs, BMT procedure charges, drug, blood products, lab investigations, hospital stay and doctor’s consulation. He needs to get HLA typing done, etc.

“This family is in desperate need of help,” writes Amra. “His mother and siblings are in Karachi to undergo tests for donors. His father Hakeem cannot come as he has never stepped out of the village and is just praying. Families have sold their goats and other animals, and jewellery has been kept aside for this. I am in contact with his cousin Ehsan who has left his job to look after this boy round the clock. Ehsan’s cell: +92-344-726-5880.”

From Sadiqa Salahuddin who runs the Indus Resource Centre, working with girls education in rural Sindh:

IRC goat distrib
For some years now, IRC has been distributing goats to rural women on Eid-ul-Azha. IRC colleagues are committed to identifying deserving villages and women, preparing a data base, form village purchasing committees, going to animal mandis (markets) with this committee, making the payments, transporting the animals to villages and distributing in a very participatory and transparent manner. Although not their primary sources of livelihood, goats are valuable assets for rural women and a source for nutrition for children.
Sadiqa Apa writes: “Considering the value of this asset for poor rural women, we will once again request you to make a donation this year as well. I am sure your response to this appeal will be as overwhelming this year as it was in the four last years. We are looking forward to your donations on this Eid-ul-Azha @ Rs 12,000 for a goat or any amounts larger or smaller than this.
“Some friends have asked why the rate is the same. The answer is that we distribute two to three months after EID and we have noticed that prices of animals in the villages have not increased much. We can still manage in this amount…. If you directly deposit in the bank, please send us an e-mail so that we can send you the receipt”.
